Freeze The Action

Capturing the "right" photo can take time and a lot of shots. Thank goodness we don't have to pay for film anymore!
Depending on what your camera is capable of, there are a few different settings that when used can bring you great results. If there's a lot of action and/or movement, I stray from my usual setting of AV (Aperture Priority) and use TV (Shutter Priority). This will help me freeze the action and the camera will pick the best aperture based on light and focus. Check your camera manual to see what the appropriate settings are for your camera (I use Canon).
The photo above was done at 1/400 sec, just about what was needed to freeze the swing and her hair blowing. Of course, the amount of available light also plays a key roll. Obviously, this photo was in made with plenty of daylight, but if lighting is an issue, you'd want to be sure to adjust your aperture accordingly and possible increase your ISO. Again, refer to your camera manual to see how that can be done on your particular camera.
