Capturing What's Real

Creating a photograph is easy. The challenge is capturing what's not immediately apparent. People can smile for the camera but ask yourself, are they really smiling? When you look at a person smiling for the camera, are they really smiling or just entertaining the notion of being photographed?

Everyone has an essence, a truth and a being. Just because it isn't immediately apparent doesn't mean it isn't there. Photography can freeze a moment when it's visible. At times we can see that moment when it happens, but capturing it is a different story.

Digging into someones space isn't always comfortable for your subject, so it's important for you to know them. Equally as important, they should know you. There's an invisible wall between you and them when a certain level of comfort isn't achieved. Only when there's trust and comfort does that barrier collapse and their concealed self appear. Better have your camera ready!
